Islamabad August 27 2022: Government has decided to provide PKR 1 million to the people who have lost their life in the floods announced by Pakistan Federal Minister for Climate Change.
The government is providing PKR 1 million (US$4,615) in ex-gratia compensation to the next of kin of people who lost their lives in the floods; PKR 250,000 (US$1,154) for injuries and for partially damaged houses; and PKR 500,000 (US$2,308) for destroyed houses.
“The first order humanitarian response needs a huge push as flood needs are unprecedented, gaps persist.Right now it is being led by the Govt, supported by United Nations & other agencies: the BISP has started rolling out Rs 25000 relief tranches of Rs 35 billion for the most vulnerable” says Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Climate Change Sherry Rehman.
She says, “As of 7 pm this evening the BISP has rolled out a first tranche to 203,560 beneficiaries. Cash is an immediate need. However hygiene kits, waterproof tents are still short on the ground for stranded families. Many are being taken to empty school buildings as ground is too wet.”
Several ministries including EAD are working round the clock with about 35 multilateral & bilateral donors to assess needs & bridge funding gaps in just the relief effort. BISP tranches themselves will cost $ 500 million at conservative estimates, while other relief needs escalate.
