Australia October 18, 2022: Test skipper Pat Cummins has won the race to take over from Aaron Finch and become Australia’s next ODI captain.
Finch called time on his ODI career during Australia’s recent home series against New Zealand and the Aussies have moved swiftly in announcing Cummins as his replacement.
Former skipper Ricky Ponting predicted Cummins would win the nod when speaking with Sanjana Ganesan recently on The ICC Review and the Australia great was proven correct.
Ponting reveals his pick for next Australia ODI captain
Cummins will become Australia’s 27th ODI captain, with the right-arm quick to lead the country in 50-over cricket ahead of next year’s 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in India.
The 29-year-old paid tribute to Finch and said he was looking forward to the opportunity to captain Australia in the one-day arena.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed playing under Finchy and have learnt an enormous amount from his leadership,” Cummins said.
“They are significant shoes to fill although we are extremely fortunate to have a one-day squad with a huge amount of experience.”
Cummins is currently a part of Australia’s 15-player squad taking part in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup on home soil, with Finch remaining on as captain at T20 level.
