Washington DC September 26 2022: Consul of the US Department of State, Derrick Sholette, has said that unlike the 2010 flood, the reason for the decrease in US aid during the recent floods is not Pakistan-US relations, but lack of resources.
Speaking to the BBC from Washington, Derek Sholett said that the situation was completely different in 2010.
He said that the US Congress had allocated billions of dollars for the welfare of the people in Pakistan at that time, which was given in recognition of the efforts made in the context of the Afghan war, but at that time we do not have those resources.
It should be remembered that in the year 2010, the Afghan war was at its peak and during that time America considered Pakistan as its close ally.
Last year, US-led NATO forces withdrew from Afghanistan, which has been ruled by the Taliban since then.
Derek Shoulet visited Pakistan at the beginning of this month, where he assured to give aid of 55 million dollars in relation to the flood disaster, in addition to the celebrations regarding the completion of 75 years of Pakistan-US relations.
It should be noted that observers are criticizing the slow reaction of the United Nations after the recent floods in Pakistan.
According to Derek Shulett, the reason for the clear decrease in aid is not the coldness in relations, but the global economic crisis and the war in Ukraine.
He said that “Economic difficulties are getting worse almost everywhere in the world and Europe is currently going through its biggest human tragedy due to the war in Ukraine.”
“The EU has already spent most of its resources for this year but we need to understand that it may take months for flood victims to recover, so we need to be ready to help.”
While talking about this further, he said that ‘during my stay in Pakistan, the Secretary General of the United Nations was also there and he has also made it clear that more assistance will be given in this regard.’
