Greenwich November 3, 2021: Green petroleum coke production in August 2021 increased in four major select markets, United States, China, India and Japan, reflecting a rebound in industrial activity and rising demand for energy worldwide during the third quarter of this year, according to CW Research’s PetcokeWeek Market Data.
In China, Japan, and India, production strengthened in the first eight months of the year, compared to the same period last year, while in the US, production weakened in the same period.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has weighed on coke output as a consequence of a reduction in refinery runs since mid-2020 in important source markets including the US. In addition, Hurricane Ida resulted in almost all of the oil production along
the Gulf Coast shutting down by the end of August. Meanwhile, petcoke demand has been booming in India, China and Japan, amidst tight availability and higher prices,” commented Prashant Singh, Associate Director at CW Group.
US green petcoke production declines in the January-August period of 2021
Green petcoke production in the United States decreased by about 5 percent year-to-date through August. However, in August, petcoke production increased by 1 percent month-on-month and by 9 percent year-on-year.
Petcoke production in the Gulf Coast, the largest producing region within the US, posted a 3 percent month-on-month
decrease, while increasing more than 11 percent year-on-year. In the first eight months of 2021, green petcoke production declined more than 3 million tons compared to the same period of 2020.

Uncalcined petroleum coke production in China on the rise in August
Green petcoke production in China increased by 1 percent in August, compared to the same month last year. For the year-to-date through August, green petcoke production was up by 2.3 percent compared to the first eight months of 2020.
Shandong and Guangdong provinces were the largest producing regions in August, posting an output growth of 1.4 percent and 16 percent, respectively, compared to August 2020.
India’s green petcoke output slightly increases in the first eight months of 2021
In India, green petcoke production rose over 29 percent in August, while year-to-date green, petcoke output saw a yearly increase of less than 1 percent for the first eight months of the year.
Meanwhile, in Japan, year-to-date, green petcoke production peaked in August. Green petcoke production increased by 32 percent month-on-month, and strengthened by over 29 percent year-on-year. For the year-to-date through
August, however, green petcoke production was down by 3.3 percent in the period.
