Islamabad July 23 2024: Pakistan power generation during FY-2024 fell by 1.9 percent to 127,160 GWh, marking the second consecutive annual decline due to higher electricity costs, rising inflation, and a decrease in economic activity in the country.
Hydropower remained the largest source of power generation, accounting for 31% of the total during FY-2024, up from 28% in FY-2023. This increased share of hydropower helped lower the overall cost of power generation.
RLNG-based power generation rose by 7 percent YoY in FY-2024, securing the second-largest share at 19 percent. The cost of RLNG-based electricity generation decreased by 2 percent to PKR 23.8/KWh from PKR 24.2/KWh last year.
Local coal-based power generation surged by 55 percent to 15,296 GWh, increasing its share to 12 percent from 8 percent the previous year.
Nuclear power generation decreased by 4 percent from last year, with its share dropping to 18 percent from 19 percent.
The average cost of power generation during FY-2024 declined by 6 percent to PKR 8.77 per KWh. This reduction was primarily due to the higher contribution of hydropower and local coal-based generation, as well as a decrease in the cost of imported coal-based generation.
