Islamabad June 3 2024: Islamabad High Court accepted the appeal against the sentence of Imran Khan and Shah Mahmood Qureshi in the cipher case and declared the sentence of both as null and void.
The brief judgment was delivered by the court on Monday while the detailed judgment will be issued later.
It should be noted that special court judge Abul Hasnat Zulqarnain sentenced Imran Khan and Shah Mehmood Qureshi to 10 years in prison in the cipher case in January this year.
On Monday, a two-member division bench comprising Chief Justice Amir Farooq and Justice Mian Gul Hasan Aurangzeb gave a verdict on these appeals. Apart from Imran Khan’s two sisters, Shah Mehmood Qureshi’s wife and their daughters were also present in the courtroom. Apart from this, several PTI leaders were also present in the court room.
It should be remembered that Imran Khan and Shah Mehmood Qureshi will not be able to be released from jail despite the approval of the appeals by the Islamabad High Court.
Former Prime Minister Imran Khan has been sentenced to seven years in prison in a case of marriage during Eidat, while Punjab Police has arrested former Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi in a case of May 9. The police had also obtained a three-day physical remand of Shah Mehmood Qureshi from the competent court, but the court rejected the request of the police to take the accused to Lahore.
