Islamabad February 20 2025: Pakistan power generation in January fell by 1.9 percent to 8,152 GWh, due to a decrease in economic activity and reliance of residential consumers on solar.
Electricity generation decreased by 3% to 74,494 GWh during the period from July 2024 to January 2025.
Nuclear remained the largest source of power generation, accounting for 26.6% of the total in January 2025, up from 20.8% in January 2024. This increased share of Nuclear helped lower the overall cost of power generation.
RLNG-based power generation rose by 2 percent YoY in January 2025, securing the second-largest share at 18.9 percent. The cost of RLNG-based electricity generation decreased by 8 percent to PKR 22.47/KWh from PKR 24.23/KWh last year.
Local coal-based power generation declined by 8 percent to 1,269 GWh, decreasing its share to 15.6 percent from 16.5 percent the previous year.
The average cost of power generation during January declined by 22 percent to PKR 10.79 per KWh. This reduction was primarily due to the higher contribution of Nuclear as well as a decrease in the cost of imported RLNG based generation.
