Nuclear Power Generation Makes New High On Induction Of KANUPP-2

Power consumers are likely to get 13 paisa tariff cut on the back of fuel charges adjustment

Islamabad June 20 2021: Power generation of the country went up by 8.3 percent year on year to 12,989 million units during the month of May 2021 which is the highest ever generation during the month of May. The rise in generation is witnessed on the back of rising economic activities in the country and suspension of gas to captive power plants.

During May 2021, the highest power was produced on hydel (3,465 million units) which is 26.7 percent of total power generated during the month. Hydel based generation is 34.7 percent higher compared to previous month, however compared with May 2020, it is down by 22.2 percent. The decline in hydel based power generation is witnessed due to unavailability of Terbela 4th extension. The capacity of Terbela 4th extension is 1,410 MW.

Power consumers are likely to get a 13 paisa tariff cut in term of the fuel cost adjustment for May as fuel cost for the month witnessed at PKR 5.81 per unit compared to reference rate of PKR 5.93 per unit.

RLNG based power was 2nd in the generation mix, which contributed 21.8 percent in the generation. During the month, 3.5 percent more power is generated on RLNG compared to May 2020. Total 2,829 million units was generated on RLNG.

Coal based power generation also increased by 19.6 percent o year on year basis during May 2021. The share of coal based power generation remained 20.2 percent during the month.

Gas based power generation remained 4th in total power mix, contributed 11.2 percent in total power mix. Power generation on gas has witnessed an increase of 43.5 percent to 1,454 million units. The rise in gas based power generation is witnessed due to discontinuation of gas to captive based power plants.

The 39.0 percent rise in Nuclear based power has been witnessed during the month. The rise is witnessed due to induction of KANUPP in the system. 9.8 percent power was produced on Nuclear during May 2021.

Furnace Oil based power generation increased by 6 times on year on year basis to 771 million units. Lower generation on hydel was the primary reason of higher FO based generation.

During 11 month of fiscal year 2021, generation went up by 6.7 percent to 115,862 million units compared to 108,580 million units during same period last year.
