Karachi September 26 2022: Addressing a press conference in Karachi, he said that under the law, the Municipality of Karachi has the authority to appoint another company to collect taxes.
He said that K Electric was authorized to collect this tax because it is a public company and can be audited.
It should be noted that in recent days, K Electric was given the authority to collect municipal tax from the citizens of Karachi in the electricity bills, which saw reactions from various quarters.
On Monday, the Sindh High Court has stopped K Electric from collecting the said tax. A petition against this tax was filed in the Sindh High Court by Jamaat-i-Islami Karachi Amir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman.
It should be noted that in recent days, K Electric was given the authority to collect municipal tax from the citizens of Karachi in the electricity bills, which saw reactions from various quarters.
He said that he could have allowed the old system to continue, which according to him could have been reduced. Without naming anyone, he said that some people do not want sustainable development in Karachi.
Murtaza Wahab said that only up to 16 crore rupees were being collected during the tenure of previous mayors, but up to three billion rupees could have been collected through K Electric.
He said that when the tax will be seen in the balance sheet of a private company that it has given three billion rupees to the mayor, then the public will be able to question the mayor.
He said that it was not possible for him to continue working after this decision and he would submit his resignation to the Sindh Chief Minister after the press conference.
